Saudi Arabia's Employment Landscape: Essential Restrictions for Citizens

Navigating the job market in Saudi Arabia can be quite the adventure, and as a Saudi citizen, there are a few important restrictions to keep in mind. One of the key limitations is related to the Saudization policy, officially known as Nitaqat.

This policy aims to increase employment opportunities for Saudi nationals by imposing quotas on businesses to ensure a certain percentage of their workforce consists of Saudis. While this is great for boosting local employment, it also means that certain high-demand jobs may have stiff competition among Saudi nationals, as companies strive to meet their quotas.

For instance, I remember my cousin, Ahmed, who graduated as an engineer, found it challenging to secure a job initially because many firms had already met their Nitaqat quotas and were cautious about hiring more Saudis to maintain the required balance.hiring more Saudis to maintain the required balance.

Another significant restriction is related to the nature of the job sectors that are open to Saudi citizens. The government has designated specific roles and industries as exclusive to Saudis, especially in retail, telecommunications, and the hospitality sectors.

This initiative helps to reserve opportunities for locals but can also limit the range of job options available to Saudis in other areas. For example, my friend Layla, who was passionate about working in the tech industry, faced difficulties because the sector she was interested in was not one of those earmarked for exclusive Saudi employment. She eventually pivoted to a related field that offered more accessible opportunities under the Saudization guidelines. accessible opportunities under the Saudization guidelines.

Additionally, there are restrictions on part-time and freelance work, which can complicate matters for those looking to diversify their income or work outside traditional full-time roles. Understanding these nuances can help Saudi citizens better navigate their career paths and make informed decisions about their professional journeys.
